Bangkok’s splendid Dusit Palace is in fact a complex of magnificent constructions which have been used as residential buildings by the Thai monarchy. This majestic compound was created by King Chulalongkorn at the end of the 19th century and it has been used as a primary residence by a succession of Thai monarchs including the present sovereign King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This expansive complex features numerous buildings set amidst meticulously maintained lawns and gardens.
Chulalongkorn found that his former residence, the Grand Palace was crowded and stifling, and oppressively hot in the summer. In 1897 the monarch visited Europe, touring its palaces and royal mansions. Upon his return to Thailand Chulalongkorn commenced his plans to construct a spacious as well as luxurious residential compound that would match the royal dwellings he had seen in Europe. He was undoubtedly successful in this objective, and subsequent Thai sovereigns added to and expanded this compound.
Today a number of grand buildings may be seen within Dusit Palace. One of these is the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, which formerly functioned as a reception venue. Today this handsome classically constructed edifice houses a museum and is also used for certain occasions of state. Italian marble and other costly foreign sourced materials were used in its construction and it remains a majestic sight.
The regal Vimanmek Mansion is another magnificent building within the complex. This building was in fact initially located elsewhere, but it was taken apart and rebuilt within Dusit Palace. It has the distinction of being the biggest teakwood edifice on the globe, and not a single metal nail was employed in its creation.
Another splendid building at the site is the Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall, which today is used as a museum devoted to Thai handicrafts and related matters. On the other hand the Chitralada Royal Villa is the residence of the present monarch and his immediate family. The grounds of this palace are beautifully landscaped and maintained as befitting a royal residence.
