Playhouse Cabaret at Suan Lum Night Bazaar
A ladyboy performance unlike any other
Flip through the pages of a Bangkok city guide and you’ll find endless references to the city’s famous ladyboy shows. While the seedier shows are more commonly known for erotic displays and other forms of entertainment; there are other ladyboy shows that are more toned down and family-friendly and the celebrated Playhouse Theatre is one of them.
After successful stints in Chiang Mai and the tourist haven of Phuket, Playhouse Theatre has relocated to Bangkok, bringing their own take on ladyboy cabaret with them. Situated near the Suan Lum Night Bazaar, near several big tourist spots like the night market and the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel; Playhouse Cabaret dazzles audiences with its charm, glamorous costumes, skilled dancers and classic tunes. Unlike other transvestite shows that cater more toward eroticism and shock value, the Playhouse emphasis more on skilled choreographed dance routines and well-rounded showmanship.
Each show last for about an hour and audience members are treated to around 10 separate performances that will include dance routines and renditions of Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera and even Swan Lake. The cast of the cabaret is a varied mix of trained and amateur performers. Some dancers have been performing for years and have even travelled overseas to perform, whilst others are students who dance by night. Supporting the main dancers, which includes an amazing male break-dancer, is a chorus line of dancers who bust out some very impressive moves.
The venue is a cozy and intimate setting which comfortably seats around 350 seats, all angled in a semi-circle so that all have a clear view of the stage. However, the best seats are those that are front and central. Overall, the Play House Cabaret is a great option for anyone who wants to watch a ladyboy show without the racy aspects found in shows elsewhere.
